IndiGo to Shift 12 International Flights to Navi Mumbai

IndiGo is preparing to move 12 daily international departures from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to Navi Mumbai International Airport starting in February 2027. The phased transition is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s main airport while giving the airline more room to expand its global network.

The move marks a significant step in the gradual redistribution of air traffic across the Mumbai metropolitan region. It also reflects the growing role of Navi Mumbai International Airport as a second major aviation hub for the city.

What Flights Are Being Shifted?

The transfer will include IndiGo’s existing international services from CSMIA to Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka, and Jakarta. A new daily Kathmandu service will also be added, bringing the airline’s Navi Mumbai international footprint to 12 destinations by July 2027.

According to IndiGo and Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the final dates and operating schedule will be confirmed once coordination is complete and regulatory approvals are in place.

The move will happen in phases rather than all at once.
Some domestic flights will also be adjusted to support international connections.
IndiGo says the shift will help it expand into Asia, Africa, and Europe from Mumbai.
The airline’s growing A320, A321, and A321XLR fleet is expected to support this expansion.

Why the Move Matters for Mumbai Airports

This transfer is not just about one airline changing terminals. It is part of a broader effort to redistribute traffic between CSMIA and the newer Navi Mumbai airport, especially as Mumbai prepares for major infrastructure changes.

CSMIA has been under pressure from rising passenger volumes, limited capacity, and the planned redevelopment of Terminal 1 by 2030. Moving some flights to Navi Mumbai will help create operational breathing room and reduce strain on the existing airport.

The earlier proposal was much larger. Mumbai International Airport Limited had suggested shifting 265 of its 770 weekly international departures to Navi Mumbai from October 25, affecting around 46 airlines. That plan was later deferred after airlines raised concerns over passenger convenience, flight schedules, consultation, and overall capacity planning.

What Changed in the Earlier Plan?

The Civil Aviation Ministry asked the airport operator to slow down and work out a transition that all stakeholders could accept. In response, MIAL said on October 13 that international allocations would remain unchanged through the winter schedule ending March 27, 2027.

Any later changes, it said, would be taken up only after discussions with individual airlines.

This makes IndiGo’s current move important because it appears to be a more focused and phased adjustment rather than a sweeping network reshuffle.

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Growing Role

Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial operations on December 25, 2025, after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2025. The first arrival was an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru, followed by the first departure to Hyderabad.

International operations began on July 15, 2026, with an Air India Express flight to Abu Dhabi. The airport is designed as a large-scale future hub with four terminals, two parallel runways, an Automated People Mover, and infrastructure for sustainable aviation fuel.

Its expansion potential makes it a natural choice for airlines looking to grow without the constraints of an already crowded legacy airport.

What This Means for Passengers

For travelers, the shift will likely bring both opportunities and adjustments. Passengers may benefit from a less congested airport, newer facilities, and improved long-term connectivity. At the same time, they will need to pay attention to airport codes, ground transport options, and possible changes to connecting domestic flights.

Travelers with onward international journeys should also check whether their domestic feeder flights are being moved to support the new network pattern.

Conclusion

IndiGo’s phased transfer of 12 international flights to Navi Mumbai signals a major turning point in Mumbai’s aviation landscape. The move should ease pressure on CSMIA, support airport redevelopment, and help Navi Mumbai International Airport grow into a larger international gateway.

As schedules are finalized, passengers and industry watchers will be looking closely at how smoothly the transition unfolds and whether more airlines follow suit.
