Australia Visa Biometrics for Indian Applicants: What B2B Travel Professionals Need to Know

Australia has introduced a new biometric requirement for Indian nationals applying for visas, effective from 26 October 2026. The update is part of a broader expansion of biometric collection across nearly 60 countries, including India, to improve identity verification and strengthen visa system security.

For travel agents, corporate travel teams, and visa support partners, this means one more step in the application journey. While the change is not expected to slow processing times, applicants must complete the required biometric process correctly and on time.

What Has Changed in the Australia Visa Process?

Under the new rule, eligible Indian visa applicants may be asked to provide biometric information such as fingerprints and a facial image. The Australian Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants directly if biometrics are required and share instructions on how to complete the process.

Depending on the case, applicants may need to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) or complete the process digitally through the Australian Immi App.

Biometrics may include fingerprints and facial recognition data.
Applicants will receive official instructions from the Department of Home Affairs.
Some travellers may complete the process digitally using the Immi App.
New rules apply only to visa applications lodged on or after 26 October 2026.

Who Is Affected by the New Requirement?

The rule applies only to new visa applications submitted on or after 26 October 2026. Any application lodged before that date will not be affected by the expanded biometric requirement.

This update is especially relevant for B2B travel agents handling leisure, corporate, student, and family visit visa cases. Advisors should make sure clients understand that biometric submission is now part of the visa workflow for eligible applications.

Can Applicants Complete Biometrics Online?

In some situations, yes. Applicants who have previously submitted biometrics at an ABCC and hold a valid passport may be eligible to complete the process through the Australian Immi App at no additional cost.

This digital option can help reduce inconvenience for repeat travellers and streamline the follow-up process. However, eligibility will depend on the applicant’s individual circumstances and the instructions issued by the authorities.

Why Australia Has Expanded Biometrics

Australia’s biometric expansion is designed to improve visa integrity, reduce identity fraud, and support stronger border management. Similar systems are already used by many destinations worldwide, especially for higher-risk or higher-volume visa markets.

For travel businesses, this change highlights the growing importance of accurate documentation and timely applicant coordination. Even a simple delay in providing biometrics can create avoidable friction in the visa journey.

What Travel Advisors Should Advise Clients

A proactive visa support process can make a major difference. Travel agents and corporate travel planners should guide applicants to monitor their email, follow official instructions, and complete biometrics as soon as requested.

Check visa communications regularly after submission.
Ensure passport details and contact information are accurate.
Advise clients to complete biometrics without delay.
Remind applicants that privacy and data safeguards are in place.

Will Processing Times Be Impacted?

According to the Department of Home Affairs, visa processing times are not expected to change if applicants complete biometric steps promptly. That said, delays can still occur if the applicant misses instructions, uses outdated details, or fails to attend the required centre on time.

For B2B travel teams, that means setting expectations early is essential. A well-informed client is less likely to face avoidable visa setbacks.

Privacy and Data Protection Remain in Focus

Australia has confirmed that biometric data will be collected, stored, and managed under Australian law, with relevant privacy and data protection safeguards. This assurance is important for applicants who may be concerned about how sensitive personal information is handled.

As biometric checks become more common globally, trust and transparency will remain central to the visa process. Travel professionals should be ready to explain the requirement in simple terms and point clients to official sources when needed.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Australia’s new biometric requirement adds an important verification step for Indian visa applicants, but it should not create major disruption if handled correctly. For B2B travel professionals, the focus should be on timely guidance, document accuracy, and clear communication so clients can move through the visa process smoothly.
