Air France-KLM Plans SAF Alliances in India as Demand Rises

Air France-KLM is stepping up its India strategy with two closely linked moves: more flights and a stronger push into sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF. The airline group plans to raise weekly frequencies in India from 42 to 54 for the winter season while exploring partnerships to support SAF production in the country.

The timing is significant. India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, and airlines are increasingly looking at the country not just as a destination, but as a long-term hub for growth, connectivity, and decarbonisation.

Why India Matters to Air France-KLM

The airline group currently operates across four Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru — with routes connecting them to Paris and Amsterdam. According to the company, business and premium travel delivered double-digit revenue growth in the first half of the year.

That performance reinforces a simple reality: demand is not only recovering, it is strengthening in higher-yield segments as well.

India is a strategic market for both passenger growth and network expansion.
Premium and business travel are boosting revenue momentum.
Delhi–Amsterdam remains a core route, even after decades of service.
More frequency gives travellers better global connectivity and schedule flexibility.

Winter Schedule Expansion Across Key Indian Routes

Stefan Gumuseli, Air France-KLM’s General Manager for India & Middle East, said the group will increase weekly services to 54 in the winter schedule, up from the current 42. Under the new plan, Air France and KLM will operate 27 flights each.

The winter schedule typically runs from the last Sunday of October to the final Saturday of March. For passengers, this usually means more choice, improved connections through Paris and Amsterdam, and better support for both leisure and corporate travel.

This expansion also signals confidence in India’s outbound and inbound traffic potential, especially as long-haul demand remains strong.

SAF Becomes Central to the Airline’s Decarbonisation Plans

While growth is important, Air France-KLM is also focusing on how to make aviation cleaner. At the center of that effort is Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which can significantly reduce lifecycle carbon emissions compared with conventional jet fuel, depending on the feedstock and production pathway.

Zita Schellekens, KLM’s Senior Vice President for Impact and Innovation, said India has a major role to play in global decarbonisation efforts. She confirmed that the group is actively looking for SAF partnerships in India and is open to offtake agreements if the market conditions and demand are right.

The airline is not positioning itself as a major direct investor in SAF plants, but it is exploring partnership-led models with other stakeholders.

What Is Driving Interest in SAF Production in India?

India has several advantages that make it attractive for SAF development: a large aviation market, strong industrial capacity, and growing policy support for cleaner fuels. It is also well placed to build supply chains using agricultural residues, waste streams, and other low-carbon feedstocks.

A recent study by Boeing and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials found that India has a 52 percent overall readiness score for SAF adoption. The report also notes the country’s blending roadmap: 1 percent by 2027, 2 percent by 2028, and 5 percent by 2030.

That target matters because demand could rise sharply. Under a 5 percent blending scenario in 2030, SAF demand across domestic and international aviation is estimated at about 720 million litres, or roughly 0.6 million tonnes a year.

The Bigger Picture for India’s Aviation Future

India’s estimated production potential is far larger than near-term demand, with the report placing it between 14 million and 33 million tonnes per year. That gap suggests a major industrial opportunity if policy, investment, feedstock access, and logistics align.

For airlines like Air France-KLM, this is more than a sustainability story. It is also a supply-security issue. As global aviation rules tighten and carbon reduction targets become harder to meet, access to reliable SAF volumes will become increasingly important.

SAF can help airlines lower emissions without replacing existing aircraft fleets.
India’s policy pathway offers a clear runway for long-term fuel market development.
Partnerships may be more practical than direct ownership for global carriers.
Growing air traffic in India increases the urgency for cleaner fuel solutions.

Air France-KLM’s Long Game in India

The group’s India strategy appears to be built on two tracks: serve rising passenger demand now, and help shape the market that will support aviation’s lower-carbon future. That combination is becoming more common among international airlines as they balance commercial growth with climate commitments.

Laure Daynie, Country Manager for India for Air France-KLM, noted that India is not just another route market. It is a strategic priority, and the Delhi–Amsterdam connection remains especially important as KLM marks 70 years of operations between the two cities.

As Indian aviation expands, the airlines that succeed will likely be the ones that can do both: scale up efficiently and adapt to a decarbonising industry.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Air France-KLM is deepening its commitment to India by expanding flight frequencies and actively exploring SAF partnerships. The move reflects a broader industry shift: growth in Indian aviation is increasingly tied to cleaner fuel solutions, stronger supply chains, and long-term sustainability planning.
