INTRODUCTION

Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is set to welcome the 14th International Tourism Mart (ITM) from October 29 to 31, marking the event’s return to the town after 13 years. For B2B travel professionals, this is more than a tourism showcase—it is a strategic marketplace for partnerships, product development, and destination marketing across Northeast India.

With more than 200 domestic and international stakeholders expected, the mart will bring together buyers, tour operators, tourism boards, and service providers under one roof. The event is designed to strengthen market access for the region while highlighting its cultural, natural, and experiential travel assets.

WHY THIS EDITION OF ITM MATTERS

The 14th edition of ITM comes at a time when Northeast India is gaining stronger visibility in India’s inbound and domestic tourism landscape. Tawang’s selection reflects the growing interest in high-value destinations that combine heritage, adventure, spirituality, and authentic local experiences.

For travel businesses, the event offers a chance to evaluate new product opportunities and build direct connections with suppliers from all eight Northeastern states.

43 international buyers from 22 countries are expected to participate, creating a strong platform for inbound business.
Domestic buyers and regional tourism suppliers will use the mart to explore itinerary design, FIT products, and group travel partnerships.
The event supports regional tourism development through better market access and cross-state collaboration.
It also positions Tawang as a premium destination for cultural, spiritual, and experiential travel.

WHAT THE EVENT WILL FEATURE

The mart opens with an inaugural programme attended by Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The opening will also feature the North East Bazaar and cultural performances.

Beyond the ceremonial sessions, the programme is structured to create tangible business outcomes. Tourism presentations from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura will showcase destination strengths, adventure offerings, and possible circuit-based tourism products.

B2B sessions designed for business growth

The B2B meetings on October 30 are likely to be the most important segment for industry participants. These sessions will connect tourism buyers with local businesses across hotels, DMCs, transport operators, and experience providers.

For B2B travel agents and consolidators, this creates an opportunity to:

Source new destination packages for Northeast India and custom-fit them for leisure, group, and premium travel segments.
Identify local partners for ground handling, guided tours, and experiential itineraries.
Strengthen supplier networks for seasonal and niche tourism demand.
Explore collaboration on multi-state circuits that reduce dependency on single-destination sales.

Themes shaping the Northeast tourism conversation

This year’s mart is also expected to focus on tourism sectors that go beyond conventional sightseeing. Sessions led by key ministries and industry partners will address the future of live events, access to restricted areas, and immersive travel experiences.

These discussions are particularly relevant for operators looking to diversify beyond standard leisure products.

The live events and concert economy could open new opportunities for destination travel, MICE support, and event-led itineraries.
Easier access to protected and restricted areas may improve product design for borderland and offbeat tourism.
Experience-led tourism, such as the session presented by Royal Enfield, signals rising demand for immersive and adventure-oriented journeys.
Cross-sector collaboration may help the region build stronger tourism value chains.

North East Bazaar: culture, cuisine, and commerce

The North East Bazaar will serve as a cultural and commercial showcase for the region. Delegates will experience traditional handicrafts, textiles, arts, and culinary offerings from the eight states, creating a deeper understanding of what makes the Northeast distinct in the tourism market.

For B2B stakeholders, this is especially important because product storytelling now plays a major role in selling destinations. Travelers increasingly want more than accommodation and transfers—they want food, culture, and authentic local encounters.

A strong cultural product can improve conversion rates, enhance itinerary value, and support higher-margin travel packages.

Destination visits in and around Tawang

Technical visits have been scheduled to several iconic attractions, giving delegates first-hand exposure to the destination’s tourism potential. These include Tawang Monastery, Jaswant Garh War Memorial, Jang Waterfall, Tawang War Memorial, Urgelling Gompa, Buddha Park, Pankang Teng Tso Lake, and Shernup Village.

These sites represent a mix of spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and rural tourism appeal. For tour planners, that means Tawang can be positioned as more than a scenic stop—it can be marketed as a layered destination with year-round experiential value.

Familiarisation tours for international delegates are also scheduled to begin from Guwahati on November 1, extending the business and networking value of the mart beyond the main event dates.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR B2B TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS

The International Tourism Mart is a useful reminder that destination marketing works best when industry and government move together. For B2B travel professionals, the real opportunity lies in translating destination visibility into bookable products.

As Northeast India continues to grow, agencies and consolidators should look at new ways to package the region.

Build circuit-based itineraries that combine Tawang with nearby destinations in Arunachal Pradesh and other Northeastern states.
Create experiential products around culture, food, festivals, monasteries, and soft adventure.
Work with verified local partners to improve service quality and on-ground execution.
Keep an eye on policy changes that may simplify travel access and improve destination readiness.

CONCLUSION

Tawang’s return as host of the International Tourism Mart is a significant moment for Northeast India’s tourism ecosystem. The event is expected to strengthen trade partnerships, promote new products, and open more market access for the region.

For B2B travel professionals, the takeaway is clear: Northeast India is moving from a niche interest to a more structured and competitive tourism proposition. Those who build strong local partnerships now will be better positioned to sell the region with confidence in the years ahead.
