Nepal Tourism Rises in October 2026 as US Leads Arrivals

Nepal’s tourism sector continued its steady recovery in October 2026, welcoming 132,814 foreign visitors. That marked a 3.4% year-on-year increase and reaffirmed the country’s appeal as a premier destination for Himalayan adventures, cultural discovery, and nature-based travel.

The standout story of the month was the United States, which became Nepal’s largest source market. Strong gains from American travellers helped offset softer performance from some neighbouring markets, while China posted impressive growth and Europe remained Nepal’s biggest regional contributor.

October is one of Nepal’s most important tourism months, with clear skies, comfortable trekking conditions, and strong demand for mountain scenery driving visitor interest. From Kathmandu’s heritage sites to Pokhara’s lakeside views and the trails of the Annapurna and Everest regions, the country continues to attract a diverse mix of travellers.

Key highlights from October 2026:

Nepal recorded 132,814 foreign arrivals, up from 128,443 in October 2025.
The United States led all source markets with 17,437 visitors.
China showed strong growth, while India saw a notable decline.
Europe contributed the largest share of regional arrivals, with nearly 40,000 visitors.

Nepal’s October 2026 Tourism Performance

According to the latest tourism data, Nepal added 4,371 more international visitors compared with the same month last year. The improvement underscores the country’s continued recovery and its enduring pull in the global adventure and cultural tourism markets.

October also delivered a sharp rebound compared with September 2026, when arrivals stood at 88,248. That seasonal jump is consistent with Nepal’s autumn tourism cycle, when weather conditions are typically ideal for trekking and sightseeing.

Why October Matters for Nepal Tourism

Autumn is traditionally a peak travel period in Nepal. Clear mountain views, stable weather, and accessible trekking routes make the season especially attractive to international travellers.

Nepal’s tourism product is also unusually diverse. Visitors can combine high-altitude trekking with cultural experiences, wildlife viewing, spiritual tourism, and city exploration in a single trip.

Top reasons travellers visit Nepal in autumn:

Trekking in the Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang regions
Cultural sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley heritage sites
Wildlife experiences in Chitwan National Park
Spiritual travel to Lumbini and other religious destinations

United States Becomes Nepal’s Largest Source Market

The US market delivered the strongest monthly performance, with 17,437 American arrivals in October 2026. That was a sharp rise from 13,286 a year earlier, representing growth of about 31.2%.

American visitors made up roughly 13.1% of Nepal’s total foreign arrivals for the month. Their growing presence highlights the country’s rising visibility among long-haul travellers seeking adventure, nature, and cultural depth.

Nepal’s Himalayan landscapes, trekking infrastructure, wildlife opportunities, and heritage attractions continue to resonate strongly with US travellers.

India Falls to Second Despite Remaining a Vital Market

India, long one of Nepal’s most important tourism sources, ranked second in October 2026 with 12,097 visitors. That was down from 17,298 in October 2025, a decline of about 30%.

The drop was significant, especially because Indian travellers usually play a major role in Nepal’s tourism economy. Many visit for religious travel, family holidays, business links, and easy cross-border leisure trips.

Industry reports suggest that flooding and transport disruption may have affected some travel flows in preceding months, which likely influenced the October figures.

China Posts One of the Strongest Gains

China ranked third with 11,695 arrivals, up sharply from 6,755 in October 2025. That represents growth of around 73% year on year.

This rebound is important for Nepal, as Chinese tourism has historically been a major growth opportunity for the country. Buddhist heritage, mountain scenery, and cultural experiences remain strong draws for Chinese travellers.

The improvement also signals healthier demand across broader Asian markets and adds balance to Nepal’s visitor mix.

UK and Australia Round Out the Top Five

The United Kingdom came in fourth with 9,385 visitors, while Australia followed closely with 9,352.

Both markets remain valuable long-haul segments for Nepal, especially for travellers interested in trekking, outdoor adventure, and immersive cultural travel. Together, the two countries accounted for a meaningful share of October’s arrivals.

Other Notable Source Markets

Nepal also attracted solid visitor numbers from several other countries, reflecting its broad international appeal.

Germany: 6,114 visitors
Sri Lanka: 5,560 visitors
Bangladesh: 4,893 visitors
France: 4,164 visitors
Myanmar: 3,025 visitors

These numbers show that Nepal continues to draw travellers from both Europe and Asia, even as monthly demand shifts across regions.

Europe Leads as Nepal’s Biggest Regional Market

Europe emerged as Nepal’s largest regional tourism source in October 2026, contributing 39,877 visitors, or about 30% of total arrivals.

That performance reinforces Europe’s importance to Nepal’s autumn tourism season. European travellers are especially attracted to the country’s trekking routes, scenic landscapes, heritage sites, and authentic cultural experiences.

Regional tourism breakdown:

Europe: 39,877 arrivals
Other Asian markets: 27,040 arrivals
South Asia: 24,053 arrivals
The Americas: 21,270 arrivals

Not all regions performed equally. South Asian arrivals fell by about 17.2% year on year, while arrivals from the Americas rose by nearly 29.6%.

Tourism’s Economic Role in Nepal

International tourism remains a major contributor to Nepal’s economy. Visitor spending supports hotels, airlines, transport services, trekking companies, guides, porters, restaurants, and small local businesses.

Mountain communities, in particular, depend heavily on seasonal tourism demand. When arrivals rise, the benefits can extend far beyond major cities and into rural regions where tourism is one of the few reliable sources of income.

Still, arrival growth alone does not guarantee stronger tourism revenue. Length of stay, daily spending, travel patterns, and destination choice all influence the sector’s real economic impact.

What Nepal needs to convert demand into lasting growth:

Better transport reliability and route connectivity
Stronger visitor safety and service standards
Improved tourism infrastructure in key destinations
Smarter promotion of off-the-beaten-path experiences

Nepal Nears One Million Visitors in 2026

From January through October 2026, Nepal recorded 998,734 international arrivals, up from 943,716 in the same period of 2025. That represents growth of around 5.8% and brings the country close to the one-million mark for the year.

The performance is encouraging, though Nepal still has some ground to recover before matching its 2019 benchmark of about 1.197 million arrivals. October 2026 also remained slightly below the 134,096 visitors recorded in October 2019.

That means the final two months of the year will be important in shaping Nepal’s full-year tourism outcome.

What the October 2026 numbers mean for Nepal

The latest figures show a tourism market that is becoming more diversified, but also more uneven. The US is rising fast, China is recovering strongly, and Europe remains central. At the same time, India’s decline is a reminder that Nepal’s tourism sector is still vulnerable to regional disruptions and changing travel conditions.

Even so, Nepal’s core strengths remain clear: dramatic scenery, world-class trekking, deep cultural heritage, and year-round appeal for adventure and spiritual travellers.

CONCLUSION

Nepal’s October 2026 tourism results point to a sector that is growing, adapting, and slowly regaining momentum. With 132,814 foreign arrivals, the country benefited from strong autumn demand, led by the United States and supported by solid performances from China, Europe, and other long-haul markets.

If Nepal can improve connectivity, strengthen infrastructure, and sustain international marketing, it is well positioned to turn seasonal demand into broader, long-term tourism growth.
