Nepal Suspends Restricted-Area Trekking Permits Amid Severe Snowfall Warnings

Nepal has temporarily suspended trekking permits for restricted high-altitude areas until 31 October 2026, following official warnings of dangerous snowstorms, heavy snowfall, strong winds, and possible avalanches across the Himalayas.

The move is a precautionary safety step, not a nationwide tourism shutdown. However, it affects several of Nepal’s most sought-after adventure routes at the peak of autumn trekking demand.

For B2B travel professionals, this is a reminder that mountain travel in Nepal can change quickly, and itinerary flexibility is now a critical part of selling adventure tourism.

What the Temporary Permit Suspension Means

The Department of Immigration has paused permit issuance for designated restricted areas in the Himalayas during the weather warning period.

This does not automatically close every trekking route in Nepal, but it does mean operators must verify access before confirming departures.

The restriction applies to specific controlled trekking zones, including parts of Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Humla, and Manang, among others.

Restricted-area permits are temporarily unavailable through 31 October 2026.
Tourists should not assume all Himalayan trails are affected equally.
Licensed operators must follow the latest government guidance before sending groups.

Why Nepal Took the Precaution

The latest advisory follows forecasts of snowstorms, intense snowfall, thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds across multiple provinces.

At higher elevations, the main risks include poor visibility, icy trails, snowfall accumulation, and avalanches. Lower-altitude regions may face landslides, flash flooding, and difficult road conditions.

Weather systems linked to conditions in the Bay of Bengal have made the situation more unstable than usual for late October.

High-altitude treks face the greatest safety risk.
Road and domestic air connectivity may also be affected.
Rescue operations can become more difficult in remote Himalayan terrain.

How This Impacts Autumn Trekking Plans

October is one of Nepal’s busiest tourism months, especially for trekking and mountaineering. For travel sellers and DMCs, this means sudden operational changes may affect departures, accommodation, porter arrangements, and domestic transfers.

The advisory period extends beyond the permit suspension itself, with tourism authorities asking travellers to avoid high Himalayan regions until 1 November.

That means even if permits resume after 31 October, travel companies should still wait for updated local clearance before confirming onward movement.

What Travel Agents and Operators Should Do Now

B2B travel professionals handling Nepal itineraries should immediately review all bookings for restricted-area treks and advise clients to pause movement in affected regions.

This is also the right time to reassess supplier communication, emergency plans, and refund or rescheduling policies.

Contact ground handlers and trekking partners for route-by-route status updates.
Reconfirm domestic flight schedules and road transfer feasibility.
Offer itinerary changes instead of last-minute cancellations where possible.

Clear communication is especially important for clients already en route in Nepal. Many may not understand that permit suspension applies to specific zones rather than the entire country.

Advice for Tourists Already in the Himalayas

Visitors currently in high-altitude areas should avoid exposed passes, isolated trails, and hazardous terrain until weather conditions improve.

Authorities are urging trekkers to remain in safe accommodation, follow guide instructions, and avoid unnecessary movement during the warning period.

Trekkers should also monitor for symptoms of altitude sickness and seek help immediately if needed.

The emergency numbers highlighted by Nepal’s tourism authorities include 1155 for weather updates, 1234 for disaster support, and 1144 for Tourist Police assistance.

Will Travel Resume After 31 October?

The permit suspension is currently temporary, but the actual reopening of routes will depend on updated weather and trail assessments.

Snow buildup, landslide risk, or infrastructure damage may delay access even after the official restriction ends.

For agents and corporates managing adventure travel, the safest approach is to wait for written confirmation from local authorities and authorised operators before treating early November departures as confirmed.

Key Takeaway for B2B Travel Professionals

Nepal remains open to international tourism, but this situation underlines how quickly mountain travel can shift from premium adventure product to high-risk operation.

The smartest response is proactive monitoring, flexible planning, and fast client communication. In high-altitude destinations, safety-first selling protects both travellers and business reputation.
