Shinkansen E-10: The Future of High-Speed Rail
The Shinkansen E-10, developed by Japan's East Japan Railway Company (JR East), is set to become the backbone of the MAHSR corridor. Scheduled for commercial service by fiscal 2030, the E-10 series is designed to operate at speeds up to 320 km/h, offering unparalleled efficiency and comfort. This model incorporates cutting-edge safety features, including earthquake-resistant technologies and advanced braking systems, ensuring a safe and smooth journey for passengers.
In line with the bilateral agreement between India and Japan, the MAHSR project will feature 24 E5 Series Shinkansen trainsets, with six being assembled in India. These trains will be modified to withstand India's diverse climatic conditions, including temperatures exceeding 50°C, and will be equipped with fine mesh dust filters to maintain air quality.
Vande Bharat Trains Not Part of the MAHSR Plan
Contrary to earlier speculations, the indigenous Vande Bharat trains will not be deployed on the MAHSR corridor. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that Vande Bharat and Shinkansen trains operate on entirely different systems, making them incompatible for the high-speed rail project.
The decision to opt for the Shinkansen E-10 model aligns with India's strategic partnership with Japan, aiming to bring advanced rail technology to the country. This collaboration ensures that the MAHSR corridor meets global standards in speed, safety, and reliability.
Milestones in Infrastructure Development
The MAHSR project has achieved significant progress:
Tunnel Breakthroughs: The completion of a 4.88 km underground tunnel between Shilphata and Ghansoli marks a major milestone in the project's development.
Station Developments: Stations like Bilimora in Gujarat are nearing completion, with designs reflecting the region's cultural heritage.
Infrastructure Contracts: Larsen & Toubro has secured a significant contract valued between ₹2,500 crore and ₹5,000 crore for the project, highlighting the scale and importance of the initiative.
Project Timeline and Future Outlook
The MAHSR corridor is expected to be fully operational by December 2029, with the Gujarat section targeted for completion by December 2027. This ambitious timeline reflects India's commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure and providing efficient, high-speed rail connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
