Rising Border Tensions Trigger Major Travel Advisory
Amid a sharp escalation in armed clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued an urgent travel advisory, warning Indian nationals to steer clear of seven eastern Thai provinces now considered high-risk zones.
This move follows intense violence between Thai and Cambodian forces, which has resulted in numerous deaths, injuries, and mass evacuations on both sides of the border.
Provinces to Avoid
Indian travellers have been specifically advised not to visit the following provinces in Thailand:
Ubon Ratchathani
Surin
Sisaket
Buriram
Sa Kaeo
Chanthaburi
Trat
These areas lie close to the conflict zone and have already seen the evacuation of thousands of civilians from both Thai and Cambodian territories.
Clashes Lead to Casualties and Displacement
According to Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, 14 fatalities and over 40 injuries have been confirmed so far. On the Cambodian side, nearly 4,000 residents have been displaced from Oddar Meanchey province.
Thailand has set up emergency shelters for over 100,000 evacuees within a 40-kilometer range of the border. Local travel operators have suspended tours and hotel bookings in the affected zones.
Why This Matters to Indian Travel Professionals
India is a top source market for Thai tourism. In just the first half of 2025, over 1 million Indian tourists visited Thailand. Visa-free access and the streamlined Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) system have further boosted demand.
With the holiday and wedding travel season approaching, many Indian travelers might have plans to explore lesser-known parts of eastern Thailand. Travel advisors must now proactively review itineraries, reroute plans, and communicate the latest advisories to clients.
What TAT and the Indian Embassy Recommend
Both the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Indian Embassy urge travelers and agencies to:
Avoid the 7 listed provinces until further notice
Monitor official updates via embassy channels and TAT portals
Adjust travel packages and ground arrangements to avoid impacted zones
Inform travellers about potential risks and alternative destinations
This conflict adds complexity to Thailand’s tourism recovery, especially in regions that were starting to attract more Indian group and FIT travelers.
Guidance for Travel Agents and Tour Operators
If you manage group tours, honeymoon packages, MICE movements, or custom itineraries for Indian clients:
Reassess all bookings involving eastern Thailand
Coordinate with Thai DMCs and local operators for real-time updates
Highlight alternative destinations like Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, or Hua Hin
Include clear disclaimers and safety guidance in all travel documents
Stay updated via official channels like the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the Tourism Authority of Thailand
Conclusion: Stay Informed, Reroute Smartly
With rising geopolitical tensions impacting tourism in eastern Thailand, B2B travel professionals must stay informed and agile. Client safety should be the top priority. Adjust travel plans, communicate transparently, and continue delivering value through informed guidance.
