India’s Travel Boom Is Redefining Global Tourism — What B2B Travel Pros Need to Know

India’s Rising Power in Global Travel

India is fast becoming one of the world’s most powerful forces in leisure tourism. A new generation of Indian travelers, driven by higher disposable incomes and a quest for unique, meaningful experiences, is transforming both domestic and global travel markets.

According to a recent report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the global leisure travel market could triple in value to $15 trillion by 2040. India’s domestic leisure travel alone is projected to hit $12 trillion by that time, fueled by a growing consumer class eager for travel beyond traditional constraints.

“India is positioned to become one of the world’s most dynamic leisure travel markets,” says Nitima Malhotra, Partner at BCG.

The Evolving Profile of the Indian Traveler

Over the past five years, India has recorded strong growth in leisure travel spending, bouncing back rapidly from pandemic-related disruptions. As both domestic and outbound travel rebound, projections indicate continued momentum, with domestic travel spending forecasted to grow 12% annually, and international travel spending rising by 10% per year through 2040.

Today’s Indian travelers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are moving away from purely budget-driven choices toward experiences that are personalized, culturally immersive, and purposeful. Travel is increasingly digital, data-driven, and experience-led — a shift that holds significant implications for travel businesses targeting Indian customers.

Bleisure and Multigenerational Travel Take Center Stage

A standout trend reshaping India’s travel market is the rise of “bleisure” — business travel blended with leisure. More than 70% of Indian travelers now extend business trips to include personal travel. Flexible work policies and remote working opportunities have fueled this shift, opening doors for new, high-value travel packages that combine work, leisure, and family time.

While family and couple travel still dominate, fewer than 10% of Indian travelers now opt for solo trips. However, the priorities are shifting: travelers increasingly seek unique experiences, convenience, and personalized itineraries over simply cost-saving deals.

Domestic Gems and Global Horizons

Religious tourism remains a cornerstone of domestic travel, but Indian travelers are becoming more adventurous. They’re increasingly exploring offbeat destinations at home and abroad. BCG predicts Indian travelers’ domestic, regional, and international overnight trips will grow annually by 3%, 4%, and 6%, respectively.

Cost is no longer the sole driver. Instead, travelers are choosing destinations based on authentic experiences, cultural connections, and unique activities.

Vacation Rentals Surge: The Rise of StayVista

India’s changing traveler preferences are fueling the boom in vacation rentals. A prime example is StayVista, a villa rental platform that recently secured $4.7 million in Series B funding. The platform caters to groups seeking private, upscale stays — a segment underserved by traditional hotels.

StayVista’s co-founder, Pranav Maheshwari, highlights this trend: “We’re seeing travelers moving away from hotels toward exclusive villas, particularly for multigenerational groups or large families.”

The vacation rental market in India, still in its early stages, is poised to grow significantly, potentially reaching $3 billion by 2033. B2B agents should keep an eye on this space as travelers seek unique accommodations with more privacy and tailored services.

Indian Travelers Make Waves in Global Spending

Indian travelers’ global spending footprint is expanding rapidly. In April 2025 alone, they spent nearly $1.3 billion on international travel—a 10% year-on-year surge. Travel accounted for over 51% of India’s total international spending in that month.

In FY 2024, Indian travelers spent a record $31.7 billion overseas, with international travel alone totaling $17 billion. Even as some categories of overseas spending waver post-pandemic, Indian demand for international travel remains robust.

Airlines Pivot to Serve India’s Growing Demand

Airlines worldwide are adjusting strategies to tap into India’s growing market. Scandinavian Airlines, for instance, is re-entering India after a 17-year break with a new direct route between Copenhagen and Mumbai. This move reflects India’s expanding importance as both a leisure and business travel hub.

“India is a key global market for us,” said Anko van der Werff, CEO of Scandinavian Airlines. “Mumbai is a natural next step to link Scandinavia with one of the world’s most important regions for business and leisure travel.”

This route offers convenient connections across Europe and North America, strengthening India’s position as a critical node in global travel networks.

A Bright Future for Indian Travel

India’s travel boom is more than just growing numbers—it signals a deep transformation in how, why, and where Indians travel. Younger generations are demanding personalized, immersive journeys rather than generic trips. From alternative accommodations to bleisure travel, India’s travelers are shaping new business opportunities for B2B agents, consolidators, and corporate planners alike.

For the global travel industry, India is no longer a future potential — it’s a present-day powerhouse poised to influence trends, demand patterns, and commercial strategies for decades to come.
