On 13 September 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the Bairabi–Sairang broad gauge railway line, a ₹8,070–₹8,213.7 crore project that for the first time connects Aizawl, capital of Mizoram, directly to India’s national railway network.

With this, the state capital joins a select group of Northeast capitals — including Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar — now served directly by rail.

Length and pathway: The 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang section traverses challenging terrain — 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges. Key new stations include Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
CRS Authorization: The stretch from Hortoki to Sairang secured Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) approval in June 2025, paving the way for operations.
Connectivity & Speed: Though not yet electrified, the line enables travel speeds up to ~100 km/h. Diesel traction will be used on the new section with possible electrification later.
