Japan Launches eVisa for 10 Countries: Quick, Digital Entry Made Real

Japan has officially rolled out a streamlined eVisa system as of May 23, 2025, allowing eligible travellers to apply for a short-term visa entirely online.

What is the eVisa?

  • A single-entry eVisa for stays up to 90 days, exclusively for tourism.

  • Instead of a sticker, travellers receive a “Visa Issuance Notice”, which must be presented digitally printed or screenshot version.

Who Is Eligible?

Citizens from these 10 countries can apply directly online:
Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the UK, and the USA.

Country-Specific Rules

  • China: Applicants must go via designated agencies; stays are limited to 15 or 30 days.

  • Vietnam: Only available for those on approved tour packages, capped at 15 days

  • Other Regions (e.g. India, Indonesia, UAE): May need to apply through accredited agencies, even if eligible

Only travellers arriving by air or via scheduled ferry from Busan or Shanghai can use the eVisa

How to Apply

  • Confirm eligibility and the 90-day tourism rule.

  • Go to the official Japan eVisa portal.

  • Create an account and complete the form.

  • Upload your passport biodata and travel documents.

  • Pay the visa fee.

  • Wait briefly for processing.

  • Receive your Visa Issuance Notice digitally.

  • Present the live notice at the airport check-in and arrival.

Why This Shift Matters

  • No physical consulate visits—perfect for corporate travellers, leisure groups, or busy agents.

  • Faster processing as Japan gears up for the Osaka Expo 2025.

  • Smoother cruise and flight bookings increase conversion and confidence among B2B travel entities.

What’s Next? JESTA on the Horizon

Japan is preparing to launch JESTA—a travel authorisation system for visa-exempt guests—by around Fiscal Year 2028, mirroring US ESTA, to further standardise entry procedures.

Final Thoughts

If your clients are planning a Japan trip for leisure or business later this year, the eVisa system simplifies their journey. As travel ramps up, especially ahead of the Osaka Expo, this digital visa push means better efficiency and smoother logistics for travel planners, corporate agents, and airlines alike.
